LOSS TO CHURCH.

ARCHDEACON DART PASSES

Per Press Association. NELSON. May 27. The death has occurred of A'enernblc Archdeacon J. R. Dart.

Archdeacon Dart had made a- great contribution to the Church of the Province of New Zealand. He had l>cen associated with the Nelson Diocese, for over fifty years, first as lay secretary. Ordained in 1894, he served as a young man on the AVest Coast, where among many old residents and their descendants his name is still held in high esteem, especially for his splendid work at the Brunner mine disaster. Tn 1895 lie became clerical secretary of the synod, an office he held to the time of his retirement, in 1931. In 1913 ho became A'icar of A\ Takefield and on the formation of the Cathedral Chapter in 1910 he became one of the first canons. During the war lro carried on the duties of Diocesan Secretary in addition to the work of the parish. Ho was appointed vicar of All Saints’-. Nelson, in 1925 and Archdeacon of AA'aimea a year latet.

Among the many offices he held were ATcnr-Genoral and Commissary of the Diocese, Registrar of tho Diocese, a member of the standing committee of the Diocesan Trust Board, tho chairmanship of St. Andrew’s Orphanage, and Clerical Secretary of fhe New Zealand Church Missionary Society. His work among tiro sick in the hospitals will long he remembered, while lie was always regarded as one of the most versatile and useful men in the diocese.

Archdeacon Dart leaves a widow and two sons, Mr C. AAL R. Dart, of Geelong, and Mr G. F. J. Dart, of Nelson.
