MEETING OF BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, May 27. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held to-day and was presided over by Mr .1. Linklatcr, 31. P. Also present were: Messrs .J. A. Nash, M.P., F. C. Raikcs, P. W. Goldsmith (Levin), 11. Osborne and W. E. Cartlicw (Feihling). Apologies for absence wero received front Messrs W. E. Barber and Jno. Ross.

Mr Cartlicw, a now member, was nvolenmed by the chairman, who referred to Mr Carl View's association with various local bodies in flic Ecilding district. Mr Carthew suitably replied. Prior lo the ordinary meeting, a special meeting was hold for the purpose of confirming the resolution authorising the conversion of the board's loan.

Tlio board’s working account for April showed expenditure totalling £l4d 17s 7d. Receipts totalled £216 12s 3d. The account thus shows a credit balance for the month of £66 14s Bd.

The appointment of Captain C. Vendorc as pilot, made by the local committee, was approved. The forinov pilot (Captain A. Nelson), who recently resigned, reported that during April there Wero five arrivals and five departures. The bar was found to bo holding well. No trouble was experienced in working the port.

Tho Foxton Chamber of Commerce wrote asking tho board for information relative to the. proposal to tar-scal the beach highway and offering co-operation. Mr F. C. Raikcs (presidont of the chamber), said the chamber desired to know what the actual cost of the proposed work would he. The chamber considered that a thirdclass road would be quite sufficient.

Tho chairman stated that, with Mr Nash and Mr Barber (chairman of the Manawatu County Council), lie had waited on the chairman of tlie Main Highways Board, regarding the scaling of the road. A long discussion hail ensued, but it. had been pointed cut that if the Main Highways Board carried out tho sealing of the road it would bo called on to do similar work for all other resorts between Wellington and Foxton. It was argued that the road was used, however, by people in the district from Wellington to Daimovirkc and the work therefore railed For special consideration. The board had asked what tho Manawatu County Council was prepared to do, and it. appeared that, it, was not willing to pay as much towards t.lic cost of tho job as the hoard wished. A doadlock was reached. Tho Manawatu County Council was receiving a three to one subsidy on lho present road. Mr P. W. Goldsmith said that the Highways Board could not hold out on its argument, about all resorts requiring a tarsealcd road as a start would have to he mado on one of the resorts sooner or later. The chairman: The hoard is afraid of creating a precedent. Mr Goldsmith: I liopo you well drilled into the Highways Board tlie necessity for protecting the Whirokino highway then. The chairman: I did. I always do. Mr Nash endorsed tho chairman’s remarks and said that the Highways Board wanted to know just what tho Manawatu County Council was prepared to pay towards the cost of tho work. Tlie deputation had argued on maintenance costs and what had boon already spent, and pointed out why tho board should subsidise the read-sealing work, but with not much result. Mr Nash moved that the board write to tho Manawatu County Council and request the following information: —(l) The engineer’s estimate for tar-scaling tho Beach Road ; (2) tho cost of upkoep on the existing road during the past five years; (3) an estimate for the cost of a third-clas3 road; (4) what contribution per annum tlie Highways Board is paying' tho council. Mr Nash added that ho did not think the board would over get anywhere in a request for the Highways Board to do all the work. s Tho resolution was carried and tho secretary was instructed to furnish the chamber with the details when they came to hand. GENERAL. Mr Nash referred to the fact that tho board's plan of beach sections, although properly prepared, had never ben registered. It was only fair to mortgagees who were prepared to advance money that tho certified plan should lie registered, and he moved in this direction.—The resolution was carried.

Accounts amounting to £145 6s 5d were passed for payment.
