(From Our Own Correspondent.)

FOXTON, May 24.

The animal meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening, Mr F. C. Raikes presiding. In a review of the chamber’s activities, Mr Raikes referred to the interest taken, in sand dune afforestation and said that since last meeting he had conferred with Mr M. A. Eliott, of Palmerston North, on the success or otherwise; of the Palmerston North committee which was " taking this matter up and bad been informed that the work of having the area between the Manawatu and Rangitikei rivers surveyed and mapped was progressing satisfactorily. Mr Eliott bad statead that there was little chance of this work being shelved, and the committee appreciated the co-operation given to the movement by the chamber and would be pleased of its support in the iinal push towards consummation. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance for the year, and, with the report, was adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted:—President, Mr Raikes; vice-president, Mr C. R. 'Putty; treasurer, Mr Jno. Ross; secretary, Mr R. O. Hornblow; auditor, AI r E. W. Thane. Mr G. F. Smith spoke in eulogistic terms of the work of the president during the past year, which sentiments were endorsed by other members. Reporting to the meeting, the president stated that Messrs J. Eirildater and J. A. Nash, Al.P.’s, would be submitting a report on their activities concerning the tar-sealing of the Beach Road to the next meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board. The matter, which liad first been mooted by the chain ber, had been taken up by the various local bodies concerned and the Automobile Association was very much interested in it. It was decided to write to the Harbour Board on the matter, soliciting information regarding the progress of activities and offering the chamber’s co-opera-tion. It was reported that surveyors had recently been engaged in a survey of land between Union Street and Whirokino, taking a route south of Foxton from the vicinity of Futter Street. Air H. Osborne expressed concern that the survey was possibly in conjunction with the survey of the Whirokino highway, the idea being to bring the deviated Whirokino highway along tiie high ground south of Foxton with an entrance into the borough via Union Street, with a continuation along the present main highway in Johnston Street. After a discussion it was decided io write to the Borough Council and request it to recommend to the Alain Highways Board the declaration of Alain Street as the main highway instead of Johnston Street. Appreciation of the fact tJint. Mr J. K. Hornblow had been presented with a Jubilee Aledal was made by members of the chamber.

The Hamilton Cup golf match, Otaki v. loxton, at Otaki, resulted in a win for the local club by 3j games io 3j. “The Eoxton Harbour Beard is one of the greatest assets this district has,” declared All* F. C. Raikes, Government representative on the board, in the course of itis presidential address at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. “It has often been thought and considered a possible menace by local bodies which feared that they might he rated to keep the port going. However, I ant pleased to say that there is little fear of this. Last year the hoard made a profit after paying the whole of the interest and sinking fund for the loan raised when it acquired the wharf property. The port serves a very useful purpose, especially to poultry farmers. Bran, pollard and wheat, can be delivered through the port of Eoxton to Hastings, Pahiatua, Ekctalmna, Feilding and surrounding districts far cheaper than through any other source and the tremendous benefit to be derived from its facilities cannot bo too strongly stressed.”
