HIMATANGI-SANDON HIGHWAY.
NEGOTIATIONS FOR SEALING. Further details in regard to the Manawatu County Council’s proposals to the Main Highways Board anent the bituminisiiig of the remaining portion of the Fuxton-Sandon highway came before the monthly meeting of the council yesterday, when the board forwarded the proposals it had to make in regard to the tar-sealing of the road. The board's- letter stated that an approximate estimate of tlie cost for the balance of tlio road carried out in a manner similar to that proposed for the five miles at the Sandon end would be £24,01)1), and the board was not favourable towards increasing the subsidy already promised, namely, £4 lor £l. It would appear, the letter went on, that the council was prepared find one-seventh of £24,00, or about £3500, towards the cost of tiie work and this amount on a £4 tor £1 subsidy basis would be approximately sufficient to cover a two-coat sealing which the board considered adequate to carry the present traffic on this highway, and also the traffic that would bo likely to develop within a considerable number of years. If it would help the finances of the council in any way, the board was prepared to accept a contribution of £3600 from the council and to carry out the eight miles of the work, to standard width, with a consolidated metal thickness of at least six inches, together with two-coat sealing. 'I lie letter concluded with an intimation that the board would be pleased to have the council’s views on the offer. The chairman (Cr ll’. E. Barber) said he had gone into the question of the road with the county engineer (Mr H. V. Bond) and he had asked Mr Bond to bring down a report on tlio negotiations. , , . , The report was then placed beioro fhe council which went into committee to deal with it. Following a lengthy discussion it was decided Fiat the council should stand b.v its original request for a £6 for £1 subsidy oil the road the chairman and the engineer to interview the Highways Board on the question.
