KAIRANG'A COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Ivairanga County Council was held yesterday when Cr. D. Collis presided. Others present were Crs. P. G. Mildon, iVI. W. V oss, W. G. Shannon, C. Anderson, R. A. Mercer, M. A. Moody, W. R. Houcroft and Jos Batcheiar. The City Council forwarded a copy of a letter from the district engineer of the Public Works Department wherein it was stated that it was considered that the better a.ri angenient in connection with the Eitzlierbert Bridge would be for the side roads to come in on the old road and lead on to the approach to the bridge at either end of the curve. ]f this arrangement was agreed to it would be recommended that the subsidy for the sealing be £2 for £1 in view of the increased annual maintenance. —Received, the members expressing satisfaction with the work which had been carried out, converting an eyesore into what would grow into a beauty spot. The Wellington Harbour Board advised that the election of two county members would take place on May I. Received. The New Zealand Counties’ Association forwarded a list of licensing authorities in the council’s district. —Received.

The Automobile Association (filanawatu) wrote directing attention to tho danger which existed at the Kopane bridge on the Rongotea-Longburn highway owing to the steep approaches affecting the visibility and asking that the approach on the council’s side be extended and widened. —The engineer was instructed to interview the chairman of the Manawatu County Council, the other controlling authority, in the matter and report- back to the next meeting. The Public Works Department advised that the council’s application for a subsidy greater than £2 for £1 for the mein highway bridge programme (Awahuri bridge) had been deferred pending the receipt of a special report showing the bridges which would require to be built in the Manawatu and Kairanga counties within the next few years.—Received, the engineer detailing the bridges which would be inquiring attention in the not far distant future.

Tlie Counties' Association advised that there would be a meeting of the 1 association on March 21 and invited remits relating to policy matters. —Cr j Batcheiar suggested that while the let- 1 ter was “a hardy annual,” the hospital levy of county councils should he on the basis of valuation on the population basis. This could be reintroduced as a remit If was decided to forward a remit on those lines. Mr E. L. Russell, Rnngiotu, wrote | objecting to the name “Moore’s Road” , affixed to the signpost on that route and suggesting that as it was a private road the post bear the name of the whole block, Te Ngaioroa.—The engi- j neer mentioned that it was a private road and, on the suggestion of Cr Anderson, it was decided to inform the writer and the Automobile Association ((Manawatu) that the council had no control in so far as the naming of the road was concerned. The Christchurch City Council wrote ; seeking support of its protest at the action of the State Advances Depart- j ment in repudiating liability for rates. Jt was pointed out that the Mortgage Corporation Bill would further increase the council’s difficulties. The letter was | received, the chairman remarking that , it was quite evident that while some j congratulated fill' Coates tin his Bill there were others antagonistic to it. The Public Works Department asked that it he furnished with reports on bridges situated on the recently declared Milson’s Line highway.—Left in j the hands of the engineer. The City Council forwarded a copy J of a petition from the residents of ; Boundary Road East, requesting that ; the roadway between Ruahine Street ; and Vogel Street he tar-sealed, the 1 cost to bo borne in equal shares by j the- countv and the city. —Held over: till the estimates are being considered, it being pointed out that no subsidy would bo available for the work.
