GARDEN PARTY.

FOR S.P.C.A. With the object of augmenting the funds of the Palmerston North branch of the S.P.C.A., an enjoyable tennis tournament and garden party wfis held yesterday in the beautiful grounds of the residence of Air and Mrs Bruce Lucas, Park Road. The programme was arranged by Alesdames S. Goldi.ngham and H. Petre, AV. Jacques and Alisses E. Macmillan and E. Abraham, and they had every reason to feel gratified with the result. Besides the tennis tournament, tenikoits, putting and other competitions provided ample interest. Alesdames Goldingham and Petre and Aliss Alacmillan had charge of the tournament, the winners being All's Petre and Aliss AI. Sim, with Alisses J. Gnisford and E. Alacmillan as runners-up. Messrs R. Emmett and J. Galloway had the putting competition under their care and Air A. F. AVimsett (secretary) was treasurer. Buffet tea was served on the lawn under the direction of Alesdames AV. Jacques and C. G. Moore and Misses E. Abraham and Fitz Herbert. Alisses AI. Nathan and I. Hanlpn were in charge of an ice-cream stall, and Miss E. Bosworth controlled a number of competitions. The Palmerston North AA’omcn’s Round Table Club commenced the season’s activities on Afondav evening with a meeting in the YAV.C.A. club room. Airs A\ r .Galbraith presided over a large attendance. Air K. Ross, ALA., of Feiiding. gave a comprehensive address on “A Survey of the Educational System of Alodern Russia,” liis remarks being followed with close interest. He was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Aliss Gills. KEEPING BROOAIS FIT. Frequent usage of a broom will not wear it out as quickly as careless treatment.. To keep a broom fit and in j good condition, wash it occasionally in | a pail of hot soapsuds by dipping the broom end in and out quickly so as not to soak the bristles.
