Mr and Mrs 1. Stowe, of Palmerston North, are visiting Mrs Caccia-Birch, Marton.

Mrs K. AlcLeavey, of Dannevirke, is visiting her brother, Mr J. T. Moar, and Mrs Moar, Pohangina. Miss A. C. Griffin, matron at the Old People’s Home, Awapuni, returns to her duties on Friday from her annual leave. She has been visiting Christchurch and ’Wellington. Mrs H. Paterson, of Pahiatua, who is president of the Manawatu section of the W.C.T.U., left yesterday for Dunedin where she is to attend the annual conference. Mr and Mrs J. C. Bidwill, of Jvahautara, Wairarapa, leave to-morrow on a visit to the Old Country. Mr and Mrs Ogilvie, of Auckland, are the guests of Mrs A. F. Wimsett, Church Street. The engagement is announced of Melva Jean, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. T. Ware, of Bussell Street, Palmerston North, to ltonald John, youngest son of Mrs and the late Mr D. Stevens, of Awapuni. Mrs Caroline Charnock, of Granville, New South "Wales, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, reared 14 children, and has 108 grandchildren. At the Federal Health Council’s conference in Sydney a number of women, representing various bodies, made suggestions regarding maternal mortality. Air W. M. Hughes said that the maternal mortality rate was higher than in 1911, and was now amongst the highest in the world.

Airs J. AVa.lker, of Alonrad Street, who recently underwent a serious operation in a private hospital is, her friends will be pleased to learn, making excellent progress and hopes are entertained that she will be able to return to her home at the week-end. Aiks Hazel Owen, who has been on the staff of Community Stores, Ltd., at their .shop in Waldegrave Buildings for a period of five years, was yesterday met by her fellow employees and presented with a fountain pen and pencil as a mark of the esteem jn which she is held. The manager (Air W. Gray) in asking Aliss Owen’s acceptance of the gift, wished her a very pleasant trip abroad. Aliss Owen will accompany her paronts, Constable It. Owen and Airs Owen, of Foxton on a seven months’ holiday in the Old World. The presentation of the Chamber of Commerce medal to Aliss Beryl Stevens, who gained second place in the Dominion for bookkeeping at the last Chamber of Commerce examinations, was made by the president (Air A. J. Graham) at the meeting, yesterday afternoon, of the- council of the Palmerston North chamber. The president commented that the presentation had a singularly interesting aspect, in as much, as Miss Stevens was a granddaughter of Air J. H. Stevens, an old member of the chamber, and a niece of the secretary, Air S. I. AlcKenzie. Aliss Stevens was congratulated upon her attainment, and wished every success in her studies and subsequent commercial career. Aliss Stevens was cheered and Air J. H. Stevens responded on her behalf.

In the old Legislative Council room at Parliament Buildings, Airs G. W. Forbes yesterday give an informal afternoon tea to enablo the wives and daughters of members of both Houses of Parliament to say farewell to Her Excellency the Lady Bledisloo. The room was* decorated with palms and the tables with pink and mauve asters and carnations and fern. Airs Forbes, who received the guests, wore a dress of black lace, made with a waistlength jacket which had georgette sleeves. A pink flower on one shoulder toned with the flower in the front of her shady black hat. Her Excellency wore a dress of blue-mist chiffon, made with insets of lace and a sash of narrow pink ribbon tied at the back. Her picture hat was of lacy straw in the same shade. On I.adv Bledisloe’s arrival, Aliss Jessie Forbes handed her a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. Following afternoon tea Her Excellency went among the guests and spoke to those present. “Auld Lang Syne” was sung and Her Excellency expressed her regret at leaving New Zealand. CROQUET TOURNEY. DOAIINION CHAAIPIONSHIP. In the fourth day's play at the Dominion croquet championships at Auckland, Airs Morgan (Alanawatu) and Airs Sargisson (Wellington) heat Airs E. Washer and Airs Gibbs, 26—8, but yesterday Alesdames Schubert and Stringer defeated them in a liardfought match by 26 —23. In the level singles, Airs Alorgan beat Airs Jackson. 26 —10, on Saturday and then bent Airs Kerow, 26—8, only to lose to Airs Alunro. 26—1. Commenting upon the handicap doubles nlay, the Auckland Herald says:—“Both Airs Sargisson and Mrs Alorgan played well against Airs Gibbs and Aliss - Washer, each getting in and making substantial breaks. Aliss Washer also made a good break of eight. Although having a bisque on their opponents Airs Gibbs and Aliss Washer lost the game by 15 points. It was one of the best doubles of the day.” It will interest local croquet enthusiasts to learn that to Palmerston North will fall the honour of staging next year’s Dominion tourney. AIANAAYATU ASSOCIATION. A Corbridge Stars match was played at Feiiding on Friday, when Alesdames Petrie and Alason (holdersl lost to Alesdames Richardson and Alarshall (Kimbolton), 11—26. In a Pollock Stars match at Feiiding yesterday, Alesdames Petrie and AYood (holders) beat Alesdames Bryan and T. Simpson (Northern), 26— 7. In a Bennett Buttons match at the Northern Club on Alonday, Airs Holmes and Aliss D’Ath (holders) lost to Alesdames Lee and Batchelor, 20— 26. A Brighton Alallets match was played at Shannon yesterday, when Alesdames Blaikie and Picard (holders) heat ATesdames Lee and Killick (Northern), 26 —12. OTAGO CLUB. SOCIAL AND DANCE. The monthly social and dance of the Otago Club was held in the Y.W.C.A. club-rooms, last evening. Air A. J. Graham, the president, warmly welcomed a large attendance, including Air Stuart AlcDouald, of Dunedin. The hostesses were Alesdames Wilkinson and Boyd, and supper was served by the local committee. The musical programme, which was greatly appreciated, was as follows:Instrumental trio, “Aliniaturo Trio (Gurlitt), Alisses E. Corke (piano) V. Gunter (violin) and J. Paton (’cello) ; song, “The King’s Alinstrel” _ (Pmsuti), Air AVoodhouse; vxolin_ solo, “Night in May” (Brahms), Aliss V. Gunter; song, “Sonny” (A, Aleale), Airs H. Doan; song, “John Willie” (Formby), Air Corke; ’cello solo, “Le Cygne” (Saint Saens), Aliss Joan Paton; song, “Pale Aioon” (Knight Logan), Aliss V. Corke; instrumental trio, “Minuet” (Beethoven), Alisses Corke, Gunter and Paton. Aliss E. Corke was the aceompaniste for the evening. After supper there was dancing until midnight, the duties of ALC. being efficiently carried -out by Air R. Wright. NEWBURY AVOAIEN’S INSTITUTE. An enjoyable outing was spent on Alarch 2 when the Newbury Women’s Institute held their picnic on Air and Airs A. K. Simpson's property, Ilangitikei Line. Every child received a bag of lollies. An enjoyable day was brought to a close with the afternoon tea during which the president (Airs Hamlin) thanked Air and All's Simpson for the use of their grounds, and hoped everyone had had an enjoyable day.
