BOGUS CHEQUES.

BUSINESS MEN DEFRAUDED. EIGHT CHARGES ADMITTED. GISBORNE, March 10. A story of how, within a few hours, various Wairoa, business people paid out sums totalling £55 on valueless cheques was told in the Police Court when John Lindsay appeared to answer eight charges of forgery and uttering. The evidence -showed that accused cashed five cheques, each for £lO, and one for £5, payment being made in each case for goods of small value, and balance being received in change. A brother of accused stated that he had lost his cheque book and immediatelv notified the bank, as a result of which his attention was called to six cheques on which the signature was not his.

In a statement to the police, accused said he had found his brother’s cheque book and, being short of money, had decided to opeiate on the account. He had been out of work for some time and had been drinking. Of £55 involved, little more than £l3 remained. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence.
