EARS FROZEN
! COLD IN CANADA. NEW ZEALANDER’S ESCAPE: “Somebody asked me if it was oold in Canaria. "I have spent fovir severe winters there,” stated Mr J. W. Collins. Trade Commissioner in Canada for New Zealand, with headquarters at Toronto, during an address to the Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday. “It was in February that I accompanied a New Zealand fruit delegation to Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, and the temperature was 18 degrees below zero,” stated Mr Collins. “Tho ground was frozen, and just outside the hotel we met a most picturesque Royal mounted policeman. Six feet four inches tail, clothed in bearskin, and with only his two eyes peering from his Astrakan cap and fur, lie looked magnificent. We decided to be photographed with llllil. “When we went inside tho hotel again, the major-domo said to me ‘Excuse me, but I believe your ears are frozen.’ They were, hut my companions had escaped this. The major domo took me outside to the sidewalk, where there were four feet of snow. He rubbed my ears vigorously with it, and it was tho pain of toothache multiplied a thousand times.
“I do not want that experience again,” said Mr Collins, “but nevertheless, if it had not been done, in less than six hours my ears would have swollen to the size of a horse-collar. Two weeks later this would have broken in sores, and perhaps they would never have returned to normal size again. Yes, it is very cold in Canada,” he added. (Laughter.)
