Passengers by the Cathay, which reached Fremantle yesterday from London, included Cardinal Macrory, the Papal Legate to the Melbourne Eucharistic Congress, and members of the English women’s cricket team. A Christchurch message reports that the death has occurred of Mr James Gregory-Hunt, aged 62, formerly a well-known settler of the Chathams, but lately a resident of Sumner. He was a director of the Westland Shipping Company, which owns the Tees. He was educated in the Waikato.

The death occurred yesterday of Mr Alfred Ball, senr., one of Invercargill’s best known citizens, aged 88. As Mayor, councillor and town clerk of South Invercargill, he played a prominent part in the development of that borough. He also took a keen interest in politics and was an ardent sportsman.

His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington, Rt. Rev. T. H. Sprott, is expected to arrive in Palmerston North early this evening to conduct confirmation services. He will be the guest of Canon G. Y. Woodward and Mrs Woodward to-night, and subsequently will stay with Rev. D. J. Davies, of St. Peter’s, Terrace End, and Mrs Davies.

Inspector J. Lander, of Wellington, who has been transferred to take charge of the Wanganui police district, joined the police force at Palmerston North in 1899, and has had a wide experience. He accompanied the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of York on their tours of the Dominion, and, in recognition of his services on those occasions, was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal. After serving at Palmerston North he was stationed at Foxton, and subsequently for a short time at Napier, after which he had charge at Te Awamutu for about eight years. In 1915 he was appointed a sectional sergeant at Auckland, and in 1921, as a senior sergeant, he went to Wellington, where he was promoted to the rank of, sub-inspector. He was appointed inspector on April 1, 1930, and was attached to the headquarters staff for duty as relieving inspector throughout the Qcnuainn.
