TASMAN FLIGHT
BY AUCKLAND ’PLANE.
A DAYLIGHT CROSSING
OVERHAUL OF MACHINE,
(United Press Association-—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 9, 11.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 9.
Squadron-Leader Hewett says that in the air race the range of his ’plane was 1400 miles. He and Kay are making provision for additional petrol so their range whilst flying the Tasman will be at least 1600 miles.
The machine will be equipped with wireless so they will be in touch with either Australia or New Zealand all the way. They expect the overhaul to be completed on Monday. They intend to leave Richmond early in the morning, enabling a daylight landing to be made at Auckland.
Hewett and Kay yesterday landed at Mascot from Cootamundra at 1.30 p.m. after flying through a blinding dust-storm, which was described as worse than, anything they encountered in the air race. They intend to carry out their transtasman flight early next week. It is expected that the flight will be commenced from Richmond Aerodrome between 5 and 6 a.m. The ’plane is painted a brilliant orange, with the engine cowlings black and orange.
