BACK-DATE MAGAZINES
NO IMPOSITION OF DUTY.
In the House of Representatives this afternoon llev. C. Carr asked the Minister of Customs whether lie had gone further into the matter of back-date magazines from America with a view to prohibition or some degree of control.
lit. Hon. J. G. Coates, in reply, said the Government did not at present propose to take steps with a view to imposing a duty upon ba'ck-date magazines. It was not considered advisable that any restriction should be imposed on the importation of literature merely because it was at a low cost. Precautions were taken by the Customs Department to prevent the importation of magazines or any other publications which were considered indecent documents within the meaning of the Indecent Publications Act, 1910.
