(From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, April 9. The Ruby season was opened at Sandon on Saturday with a game against Feilding juniors, the visitors winning after an even games hv 6 points (2 tries) to 3 points (penalty goal). The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea after the game.

The competitions for tennis trophies donated by Mr and Mrs Lawrence were completed last week, results being as follow :—Ladies’ singles, 4th round: Mrs E. Bowater 61 beat Miss B Lunisdcn 40, Miss G. Sanson 61 heat Miss M. Oppatt 35, Miss L. Gedye 61 beat Miss R. Dwyer 57. Semifinal : Miss G. Sanson 61 beat Miss L. Gedync 46. Final: The rules of the competition provided that each competitor should be defeated twice before being out. Mrs Earl Bowater and Miss G. Sanson met in the final, each player having gone through without a defeat. In the first game Mrs Bowater (owe 5) beat Miss Sanson (2) 61— 49. Tho second game was won by Miss Sanson 61 to 49. Mrs Bowater won the third game, the scores again being 61—49. Men’s singles: F. Murphy 61 beat R. Nicol 35, D. Hainmond 61 beat Ken Lumsden 34. Final: D. Hammond 61 beat F. Murphy 53. The masquerade dance arranged by Sandon Tennis Club for Friday night was a successful function. Visitors were present from Palmerston North, Marton, Bulls, Halcombe and Rongotca. Monte Carlo competitions were won by Air and Airs W. Aiken and Air I. Sutherland and partner. Lucky spot dances were won by Air J. Powell and Mrs B. Young and Air Roy Lumsden and Alias A. Bracken. Euchre prizes were secured by Air J. Meyer and Aliss AI. Butler. Consolation prizes wore won by Air C. Alullin and Airs E. J. Davey. The music was supplied by a Palmerston North orchestra, extras being contributed by Alisses Frccklington, Jean Butler and Air Godson. The supper was dainty and was under the direction of lady members of the club. R.S.A. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. With the approach of the winter season, the social committee of the Palmerston North R.S.A. has made a commencement with its billiard competitions. Play has been entered upon in the AlcHardy Cups series, which are contested under championship and handicap conditions, while the midweek competitions have occupied the attention of the members on the past two Wednesday evenings. The opening tourney took the form of a billiard competition, when 16 players took part, the winner being Mr R. Buchanan, with Alessrs W. G. Clemoes and C. W. Smith filling the minor positions. Two contestants. Alessrs J. W. Rutherfurd and C. W. Smith, returned totals of 59, the highest scratch score of the evening. The succeeding competition —a snooker tournament — attracted 14 players and on this occasion Air F. J. Patterson gained the largest measure of success, while he also took the award for the highest scratch score with a total of 55. Air 11. Buchanan was again in the placings, occupying second berth, with Air A. T. AlcAiurray third.
