OFFICERS ELECTED

CONGREGATIONAL ASSEMBLY. At the Congregational Union Assembly to-day the morning’s devotions were led by Pastor P. Bell (Lower Hutt). The final business session of the assembly was opened at 10 o’clock, the chairman (Rev. Geo. Heighway) presiding. The election of officers was taken, the following being elected: Chairman for 1935, Rev. Albert Mead, M. ; preacher for 1935 assembly, Rev. J. Milburn Stewart; Moderator and secretary, Rev. Ha.rry Johnson; treasurer, Mr T. Forsyth, F.1.A., N. ; registrar, Mr R. P. Stewart; auditor, Mr H. H. Miller, A.1.A., N.Z.; magazine editor, Rev. Albert Mead; magazine business manager, Mr J. A. Wilkinson; Young People’s Department Secretary, Rev. H. W. Newell, M.A.; college warden, Rev. F. J. Shaw, B.A. The following resolutions were unanimously adopted : “That this Assembly strenuously protests against the indiscriminate sale of art union tickets on the public streets of our cities and towns.” “This Assembly of the Congregational Union of New Zealand views with the gravest concern the present situation with regard to the evil ot unemployment in this country. While recognising the general desiie to help those in distress, we feel that the present method is inadequate both because of its dangerous tendency towards the moral and physical deterioration ot those who are unemployed, and also because it cannot lead to any permanent solution of this, the biggest problem facing our civilisation. \Ve would urge our enurches to do their share towards rousing the moral conscience of our people, in order that they may be eager to make any sacrifice and try any method which can lead to the reabsorption of the unemployed, and the general industrial life of the nation. “That this Assembly vigorously protests against the action ot the Government in promoting and encouraging on a la.rge scale excursion trains on .Sunday.” The mover of this resolution contended that it was wrong that the Government railways should be made to pay at the expense of morality, righteousness and religion. lhe resolution was carried unanimously. Hearty votes of thanks were carried to the ministers and officers of Emmanuel Church, and to the ladies, tor their hospitality; to the choir and organists of the Church; also to all who had contributed to the success ot the meetings—special reference being made to the good service rendered by the Press. , , , T The 1934 Assembly business closed with the singing of the “Doxology.
