LEGAL FRATERNITY AT PLAY. WELLINGTONIANS WIN. The annual “Devil’s Own” tournament conducted by the members of the legal fraternity of Palmerston North was concluded at the Holco- • whitu .links yesterday. All the competitions were decided upon a liandii cap basis and the finalists in the principal competition, the “Devil’s Own” Handicap, proved to be G. C. Phillips, of Wellington, and B. J. Jacobs, ■ of Palmerston North, the former' being a 14 handicap player and the lather on a 20 handicap. After being 1 up at the turn, the home representative lost four holes in succession, the game terminating at the 15th with tho Wellingtonian 4 up and 3 to play. In the subsidiary contest, the Mortgagors’ Belief Stakes, two visitors fought out the final and P. W. Dorrington, of Dannevirke, after being 3 up at the 12th, went to pieces and was beaten by L. C. Hemery, of Wellington, 2 and 1, although the latter had to concede the final hole through getting into the bunker , fronting the green. The winner was off a 10 handicap and the runner-up off 14. Following upon the two preceding days, which were very pleasant for play, the standard of golf fell away yesterday when the bitter wind and intermittent rain proved upsetting. However, the tournament was brought ■ tfj a fitting conclusion in the late afternoon when a visitor, A. T. Young, of Wanganui, had the pleasure of holing out at the 12th in one. Y'esterday morning a “Distress Foursomes” engaged the attention of the players, other than the semi-final-ists and finalists in the principal handicaps. The winners proved to be G Swainson (Pahiatua) and F. Mackie (Woodville) with a card of 71 . E. Lawry (Napier) and J. Graham (Feilding) w r ere the runners-up with 75. In the afternoon the “No. 5 Scheme” four-ball bogey was played, when some excellent cards were handed in, the winners proving to be F. Christensen and I. IV. N. Mackie, who had a card of 4 up. PRIZES PRESENTED. ; At the conclusion of play the competitors assembled in the clubhouse, when Mr J. A. Grant, chairman of the controlling committee, prior to calling upon Mrs B. J. Jacobs to hand , the successful competitors their tro-
phies, expressed the hope that all had thoroughly enjoyed the tourney, even though the weather for the final day had not been altogether pleasant. As each competitor came forward to accept his trophy he came in for a rousing reception. Mr E. J. W. Hallett, of Hastings, voiced the appreciation of the visitors at the hospitality extended them, assuring the chairman that they would make every endeavour to be with them again next year. Mr A. E. Lawry. on behalf of the committee, handed tp the secretary, Mr G. I. McGregor, and the tournament manager, Mr E. A. Hamilton, small tokens of the competitors’ appreciation of their efforts in arranging and conducting the tournament. The trophy winners were: —“Devil’s Own”; G. C. Phillips; runtier-up, B. J. Jacobs.
