MARTON, Sept, 22. The annual bulb show promoted by St. Stephen’s Church, Marton, was held yesterday under bad weather conditions. The recent beautiful spring weather, however, had produced high-quality blooms, and the entries were bigger and better than for some years. In the open classes Mr Alan Gibson (Marton) practically carried all before him.'Mr C. H. E. Rhodes (Wanganui) secured a first, Mrs A. O. Meyrick a second. In the amateur classes the most successful exhibitors were Mr J. C. Glover, Mrs A. O. Meyrick, Mr C. 11. E. Rhodes, Mrs Honcyman, Mrs Moorby, Mrs Gower and Mrs E. J. Smith. The special prizes were won as follows: Mrs Fullerton Smith’s trophy (to bo won three times) for most points in amateur classes: J. C. Glover. (Previous winner, J. C. Glover.) Mrs Duncan Simpson’s challenge cup for most points in narcissi classes secured by Rangitikei grower: Mrs Honcyman. Mrs H, Galpin’s trophy for champion bloom in amateur classes: G. H. E. Rhodes (Wanganui), with a seedling barrii raised by himself. Champion long trumpet: Mr J. C. Glover’s “Kantara.” Mr J. C. union dance was held in the Empire Hall last evening and despite the bad weather there was a good attendance. The music was supplied by a Palmerston North orchestra which proved very popular with the dancers. A special exhibition dance was given by Miss Joyce Hayward and partner. Extras were played by Mr A. Low and members of the orchestra. A Monte Carlo one step was won by Mr Dunn and Miss Lampp, Mr K. Atkinson and Miss Jenkins winning the spot waltz. Messrs F. Wood and W. Lyon made capable M.C.’s. Special thanks are duo to Mrs Wilkie and her helpers for the dainty supper they arranged. The annual re-union of the Marton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening, there being an excellent attendance despite stormy weather conditions. Taihapc, Foxton, Feilding, Palmerston North and Huntcrville Brigades were well represented and a very enjoyable evening was spent in toast, song and story. Mr Arthur Way presided. Foreman Little (Palmerston North) proposed the toast of the “United Fire Brigades Association,” which was responded to by Secretary L. Mclndoc. “The United District Fire Brigade Association” was entrusted to Lieut. Tweedic (Hunterville) and Past President R. Anderson. Messrs S. J. Gibbons and T. Low were in charge of tho toast of the ‘Marton Borough Council.” “The Marton Volunteer Fire Brigade” was proposed by Mr S. Holmes. Superintendent Anderson replied. The chairman presented tho honours won by several firemen, and in pinning a 25 years gold star on Fireman L. Miles, congratulated him on attaining this coveted honour and on the great interest that he had displayed in fire brigade matters. Fireman Arthur Anderson was presented with a five years medal; Secretary L. McIndoe with a two years gold bar (mak- j ing 31 years’ service), and Fireman A. j Campbell with a silver bar (9 years’ service). Fireman Hector Archibald (who was absent) receives a three years’ certificate. Each of the recipients was accorded a hearty reception on receiving his honours. “Tlie Gold Star Members of the Brigade” was proposed by Superintendent Sporlc (Feilding), and responded to by Fireman L. Milos and Secretary L. Mclndoc. Lieut. S. Anderson proposed “Honorary Members,” which was replied to by the chairman and Mr F. Andrews. “Visiting Gold Star Members” was proposed by Secretary L. Mclndoc, and responded to by Fireman J. Follas (Huntcrville) and Foreman Little (Palmerston North). “Visiting Brigadesmen” was replied to by Fireman J. Jones (Taihapc) Supt. Reid (Foxton), Lictu. ' Sporle (Feilding), Lieut. Tweodio (Huntcrville) and Foreman Little (Palmerston North).
