PAHIATUA, Sept. 23. A good number attended the Gymnastic Club’s debate last evening. Unfortunately, the club’s patron, Dr H. Paterson, was unable to take tho chair. His place, however, was filled by Mr G. H. Hodd. In introducing the Palmerston North visitors, Mr Hodd referred to the several happy meetings that had taken place during tlie I last few years between the two teams, j The subject, “Should State Lotteries be | Adopted in New Zealand ?” was an exccli lent one and Mr Shearer, loader of the Palmerston North team, brought forward some very sound arguments .in favour of such adoption. His arguments were soundly supported by his two colleagues, Messrs Corry and Muirhead. Mr G. L. Stafford was the leader of tho local team (who were allotted the negative side), his theories being enlarged on by his supporters, Messrs M. Priest and N. Richardson. The judges were Rev. K. L. Warren and Mr J. Marsh, and declared the local side the winners by a very small margin. Supper was served immediately after the debate and was followed by dancing until about midnight. Miss E. Burt ably performed at tlie piano. A successful meeting was hold recently 'with a view to forming a local troop of tlie Legion of Frontiersmen. After the, aims aiid objects of the legion had been outlined by Frontiersman South, a recruiting committee was set up consisting of [Messrs L. T. Herbert, 11. A. Bick, B. Cook, Oxley and South. Mr C. Horrax, who has boon . visiting Pukctatava, Tuakau, bad the misfortune whilst there to bo concerned in an accident by which his left arm hats been in capacitated. Mrs S. P. Gird wood, formerly of Pahiat.ua, has been for several weeks past an inmate of the Waikato Hospital, Hamilton.
