LONGBURN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONGBURN, Sept. 23. - On Monday evening there was a large attendance at the hall, the occasion being a eompliementary social evening tendered to Mr A. Hearle, of the railway station staff, who is being transferred to Masterton on promotion. Mr W. Weddell presided. During Mr Hearle’s residence in Longburn he had taken a keen interest in all matters which had for their object tho betterment of conditions generally. He lias rendered yeoman service as a member of the School Committee of which he was secretary for a number of years and his untiring work oil behalf of the children during the recent diphtheria outbreak will long be remembered with gratitude by numbers of parents. Mr Hearle has also been a member of tho Rifle Club since its inception and is one of tho most efficient shots, his average always being near the top. During the season just closing he has been vice-captain, handicapper and coach and has always carried out these duties with great tact and discretion. His departure from the district will be a distinct loss to the club. Mr Hearle was also a member of the Hall Society Committee for a number of years and as such found many opportunities of rendering much service to the community generally. Tho chief speakers of tho evening were Mr J. Callesen (School Committee), Mr W. Birch (Rifle Club) and Mr F. Brockliss (Hall Committee), and all spoke in laudatory terms of the services rendered by the guest of honour, and wished him and Mrs Hearle and family much success and happiness in their new sphere. Other speakers were Messrs Weddell, Mahoney, Lemberg, Oliver, Sterling, O’Keefe, Anderson, Meehand and Sansom. The chairman presented Mr Hearle with a travelling rug for himself and also one for Mrs Hearlo. In reply, Mr Hearle expressed his thanks for the pleasant evening accorded him, and also for tho splendid gifts. Ho was sorry to be leaving Longburn, whore ho had so many friends. He would long remember The many kind remarks passed that evening. Musical items were rendered by Messrs Hearle, Cross, Ormsby, Meehan and Francis.
