ENGLISH GOLFERS.
PLAY IN BIG TOURNAMENT. Received September 22, 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 21. In the News of the World golf tournament, Alliss, in the presence of 2000 spectators was dominant in all his delicate shots and decisively beat Cotton and Whitcombe. The semi-finals were played in a downpour. In the fourth round E. Whitcombe beat Hodson 4 and 2; Alliss beat Cotton 4 and 3; Compston beat Peters 5 and 4; Seymour beat Green at the 19th. In the semi-finals Alliss beat Whitcombe 4 and 3 and Seymour beat Compston 2 and 1. Hodson surprisingly defeated Padgham in the earlier play of the tournament. Cotton defeated Kenyon in the morning and Burton in the afternoon in the third round, 5 and 4. Alliss defeated Sherlock, 5 and 4. Hodson beat Padgham, 1 up. Green beat Firkins, 2 up; Seymour beat Rees, 2 and 1; Peters beat Jarman, 2 and 1; Compston beat Watts, 5 and 3; Ballantine beat Davies. C. Whitcombe, R. Whitcombe, and Denny were eliminated in the second round.
