TRUNK CALL TELEPHONY.
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 19. ■ General Post Office engineers have just completed the installation of a new type of telephone switchboard, whereby London subscribers can obtain a trunk call to any part of Great Britain practically as quickly as they can get a local number. The principle on which this new “on demand” system works is that the same operator who accepts the call carries the connection right through to its destination. Similar facilities to all big cities in Europe will be available in a few weeks. This stage will be facilitated hv the new Anglo-French telephone ■cable laid two days ago.
