FIGHTING THE PLAGUE.
BUBONIC SCOURGE IN MANCHUKUO. Received September 21, 11.10 a.m. SHANGHAI, Sept. 20. The whole of Mancliukuo is now united in a three-line defence against the southward sweep of the dread bubonic and pneumonic plagues, which are at present raging in the north, claiming hundreds of lives. It is estimated that 600 have succumbed during tlie last fortnight. Hundreds are also reported to be dying of the scourge in the Tungliao district. Other affected areas are at Taonan, while the Chinese, Eastern Railway authorities have established quarantine stations at Tsitsihar and other important stations for passengers travelling via Siberia. With the approach of cold weather the situation becomes worse and river traffic may be suspended.
