MR COATES FOR LONDON?
TO NEGOTIATE CONVERSION. RUMOUR DISCOUNTED. (By Telegraph-—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21. The suggestion is being discussed in Parliamentary circles that lit. Hon. J. G. Coates, in the capacity of Minister of Finance, may proceed to London after this session to negotiate the conversion of the £5,000,000 shortdated loan which matures early in tlie new year. In this New Zealand would be following the Australian Federal Government precedent, Rt. Hon. S. M. Bruce, as a member of the Cabinet, being appointed to represent the Commonwealth in London during the conversion operations which have been so successful. Though lobby rumour is explicit that Mr Coates would spend three months in London on a financial mission with the status of Resident Minister, a singular fact is that the rumour cannot be supported from any official source. The “Standard’s” representative has good authority for stating that the matter has never been considered by Cabinet.
