THE RELIEF WORKER.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I was rather surprised on reading last night’s edition to find that there is anyone so ignorant of the lot of tlie relief worker as to write such a letter. “Citizen” was surprised, or to put it in his words, “amused and not a little disgusted,”
to hear that a deputation representing a small section of the relief workers waited on the Relief Committee with a demand that rations be supplied without work; That deputation presented a petition signed by 500 men; 95 j>er cent, of the men asked to sign did so. Surely that cannot be said to be a small dissatisfied section of men on the relief. “Citizen” says the relief worker gets 16s worth of rations per month I would like to be able to, place the same value on what I receive from the depot. If “ Citizen” would give me an order on a grocer I would be glad to give him 16s worth of labour. As for the boots, he should see mine; they never were worth £l. As for rent, I am quite willing to produce my rent book. lam paying 15s weekly, not such a minimum when taken from the huge sum of 30s; on the remainder I have to feed four children, clothe them, and keep my wife better dressed than “Citizen’s” wife and keep a little to patronise the places of amusement “Citizen” refers to. Seeing that “Citizen” is decent and sensible, I am quite prepared to swap my job 1 for his and relieve him of all his worry and anxiety and then he would : be able to enjoy the benefits of the re--1 lief worker’s lot. —I am, etc., | ANOTHER CITIZEN.
