WORK PREFERRED.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —It is about time Palmerston North people were told that certain “deputations” of relief workers protesting at working for rations no more represent the views of conscientious relief workers than does tlie silly letter of “Citizen No. 2.” Those who jiave had most to do with all phases of relief work locally agree that about 40 per cent, of them are genuine New Zealanders who would scorn to accept gifts of food. Another 30 per cent, are drifters ivho do not trouble much either way, whilst the remaining 30 per cent, will take all they caii grab and ask for more. The whole point is that able-bodied men who demand gifts of food have simply lost their self-respect, if any. If it has become necessary for us to develop a nation of navvies, we needn’t develop a nation of cadgers. May I add the greatest respect for Mr Christensen’s sincerity. I cannot imagine him really wanting something for nothing.—l am, etc., ANOTHER ON RELIEF.
