BOXING PARTY.

RETURN FROM CHAMPIONSHIPS. The party of Manawatu boxers who attended the New Zealand championships at Blenheim returned to Palmerston North yesterday after a most enjoyable trip. Although the local aspirants for honours were not able to secure a title and thereby win a trip to the Australian championships at Brisbane, all four representatives put up very, creditable performances. M. Candy, who fought in the welterweight 1 class, went through to the final only to be beaten after a great contest by W. Purdie, a member of a wellknown Auckland sporting family. G. Downes won his initial contest in the lightweight class, but then encountered R. Purdie, the New Zealand Olympic champion. The Manawatu lad kept the Aucklander very busy in the first 1 two rounds, but could not maintain the effort. N. Wheeler was beaten by Hawes, of Greymoutli, who was run-ner-up in the featherweight class, while L. McLouglilan was defeated by McKay, of Gisborne, who went on to gain the championship. J. McMahon was to have represented Manawatu in the middleweight class, but after winning his first bout by default he was compelled to default in turn owing to his having succumbed to influenza. Thus, with the exception of McMahon, three of the four aspirants had their colours lowered by candidates who went on to gain titles, while the other was beaten by the runner-up in his section—a veiV pleasing performance. Mr B. O’Keefe accompanied the boys as their trainer, while Messrs W Candy, W. A. Candy, J. Chase and L. E. Downes, of Palmerston North and L. Poupard and A. N. Morcom, ofßongotea, also made the trip, Mr W. Candy representing the local association at the annua] conference.
