TARIFF REQUESTS.

EVIDENCE AT DUNEDIN. ’ Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Sept. 11. The Tariff Commission resumed its sittings this morning. Greig and Co. requested maintenance of the present rates on roasted coffee, coffee essence, jelly crystals, sauce in vessels of ten gallons capacity and under, unground spice, vanilla beans and ground spice. , It was stated that the firm was using New Zealand-made bottles and jars to a considerable extent and was quite satisfied with them. Mr Samuel Jacobs brought before members the difficulty retailers experienced when increases were made in the duty on tobacco and cigarettes in apportioning such increases among the lower-priced and most commonly consumed lines, and asked that in future impositions of duty on tobacco and cigarettes, tobacco duties be increased at the rate of Is 3d per lb. or any multiple of such sum, and that the duty on cigarettes be imposed at the rate of 8s per 1000 Or any multiple of that sum. Wholesale tobacco merchants could then charge an extra Is 4d per pound on tobacco and an extra 8s 4d on every 1000 cigarettes, this addition making provision for cash discounts to retailers.
