DROUGHT CONTINUES

The prolonged drought continues and forecasts indicate further fine weather. The water problem is causing some anxiety in the small towns and villages.
In several parts of the country there were further outbreaks to-day of fires which, during the past few days, have devastated hundreds of acres of heath and common land, causing heavy damage by the destruction of plantations, particularly in the south of England.
Extra patrols are on continuous duty in the New Forest, where ten fires occurred during the week-end.

FIRE-FIGHTERS WEAR MASKS
LONDON, Sept. 11. Serious fires accompany the continuance of the drought. While hundreds of people were parading at Worthing Pier it suddenly caught fire, destroying a pavilion valued a.t £30,000. Some of England’s famous beauty spots have been devastated. Seventy Air "Force men helped to fight a fire at Epping Forest. Soldiers wearing gas masks and steel helmets fought a vast heath fire on Surrey Common, which invaded the greens and fairways of the Sunningdale golf course.
