WELLINGTON MEETING. AVERNUS PRINCIPAL WINNER. WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. The weather was beautifully fine for the Wellington Trotting; Club’s meeting on Saturday. The totalisator handled £13,431, as against £12,127 for the corresponding mooting last year. The racing generally was of a high standard, tho results of the two principal races —the Bollard Memorial and Wellington Handicaps—being in doubt up to within a lew yards of tho winningpost. NAI NAI HANDICAP TROT (harness), of 130 sovs. 3.36 class. One mile and a half. 3- MR PENALTY, 24yds bbd (C. S. Donald) 1 2-2 EL MERIT, scr (McDermott) ... 2 4- WAll, 36yds bhd (Eagan) 3

Also started: 6-5 Blue and Gold scr, 1-1 Modern Girl 12yds bhd, 5-6 Katutc 36yds bhd.

A neck; half a length. Blue and Gold was fourth. Times, 3.34, 3.36 1-5, 3.33 2-5.

In a good finish Mr Penalty scored nicely from El Merit, with Walt a close third. The latter was called upon to cover a great deal of extra ground, and in the circumstances did well to finish in the money.

Over the last quarter-mile Agile, who was a hot favourite both ways, endeavoured strenuously to roach the leader, Mabel Chimes, who stuck on gamely to win by half a length. Modern Giri was a poor third, and the nearest of the others wore Portlight, Guy Junior, General Wrack and Aerial Boy.

A nock: a length. blaster Roy ' was fourth. Times, 4.33 4-5, 4.33, 4.35 2-5. Raydus made the early running from Avernus, Meteor, Purser and Master Roy and when Raydus tired half a mile from homo .Meteor went to the front, with Ngingongingo putting in a fast run from the back. Meteor, Ngingongingo and Master Roy led Avernus into the straight, the last-named making a good effort to take charge a furlong from the post. He then held off challenges from John Jinks and Purser comfortably. blaster Roy was a good fourth, with Meteor and Ngingongingo next. Tho favourite, Arabond, began badly, and was always toiling ill the rear.

With about four furlongs to go Rey Spec ran up to Royal Chcnault, tho bracketed pair, Lilian Bond and Lord Leslie, being a length further back, closely attended by Special Sup. From then or the favourite was novel- in danger, of being beaten, and he eventually won comfortably by three lengths from Lord Leslie, who beat Lilian Bond, who was about four lengths further back third. Wah took charge at the end of five furlongs, when El Merit, Blue and Gold and Real Belle successively broke, and after that Mr Penalty was the only one to press him at any stage. Grand Finale was content to trail Modern Lady to the straight, in which he went on to win very comfortably by four lengths from Modern Lady. Tollgate did best of the others and secured third place. In a great race down the straight Silver do Oro gained a narrow victory from Purser, who had little to spare from Blue Mountain and Ron. When returning to the birdcage Ron reared up and fell dead.
