SACRED CONCERT.
UNEMPLOYED TO BENEFIT. The funds of the Central Relief Committee were augmented last night to the extent of £ls as the result of the concert staged in the Opera House, when a large audience assembled to be entertained by such well known artists as Miss Pollard, Mrs Ronald Aird (Rongotea), Miss Howley, Mrs Plummer, Messrs F. Gedson, Woods, Dan Foley (Wellington), A. Sundborn, J. W. Davidson and Whitelock. Mrs B. F. Barlow was the accompaniste. The variety of the programme and the excellence of the artistry displayed kept interest alive throughout the entire proceedings. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) thanked all who had lent their assistance in promoting the success of the concert, particularly Mr Foley, of Wellington; Mrs Barlow, who for the past year or two had acted as accompaniste, and Mr Garde Grimshaw for arranging for a number of pupils to assist with the programme. His Worship emphasised that relief was never more urgently required than at the present time and the proceeds of the concert would be very gladly received by the committee. Every day he was forced to refuse requests for food and clothing. The assistance necessary this winter was beyond the power of local committees, said Mr Mansford, and the Government and the Unemployment Board must realise it. The local committees were only too anxious and willing .to co-operate with the Government; nevertheless, a grave responsibility rested on the legislature to provide boots and clothing as the winter was here. They were wanted now if it was to be any use this winter. Mr Mansford proposed a vote of thanks to Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., the artists, /accompaniste, Mr Jackson (for the use of the theatre) and to Mr McLeod (for the use of the piano and assistance).
