NO DISTINCTIONS MADE.

UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD’S ATTITUDE.

i Objections have been raised by certain members of the relief workers to being required to work with free labourers who have entered the ranks of the relief workers after having been engaged at freezing works during the season. On one job recently a worker ivas subjected to considerable criticism for his action in taking employment as an alleged “strike-breaker” at the freezing works. 'The attitude of the Unemployment Board on the subject is contained in the following statement which has been issued by the local certifying officer, Mr W. H. Cad wall ader :—“The board says definitely that no recognition will be given to any one section of relief workers - ns against any other section, and should unionists refuse to work with free. labourers on relief works, then they get no relief pay.” Mr Cadwallnder said the department would certainly not attempt to draft non-unionists into a separate gang; if any of the relief workers objected it was their own “look-ont,” and the Unemployment Board could not be expected to encourage their prejudices. He stated, however/ that no definite complaints had been'received from any of the men as yet.

A meeting of the Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held a few days ago to protest against non-union men being placed on relief gangs with other workers. About 50 job-delegates were present, representative of some 300 city relief workers. Those present decided that they and the gangs they represented would refuse to work with non-union men.
