Constable Thom, of Wellington, who is a native of Marton, is spending holiday leave in the district. Dual relay : Tutaenui team 1, Rata 2. _ Tho Marton Borough Council mot last evening, there being present -the Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), and Crs G. B. Gregory, A. ■A. Mclndoc, A. Honeyman, W. B. Langston, A. J. B Sicoly and K. A. Williams, Mr C. C. McDonald, town clerk, and W. Brant, overseer. The secretary of tho Marton Swimming Club applied for permission to hold a carnival in tho swimming baths on February 3. — Granted. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote advising that trees on Hereford Street wore interfering with tho telegraphic line. —Referred to the overseer with power to act. Mr A. Slcsser wrote on behalf of the Marton Rover Crew asking permission to use tho swimming baths on Wednesday evenings for an hour to facilitate instruction to members of tho Rover Crew in life-saving.—Granted during the pleasure of tire council. G. J. Wilhelm wrote on behalf of Mill Street residents asking the council to put standard hydrants in tho Mill Street water main with provision for attaching garden hoses to bo used in case of fire. Mr Wilhelm is to be advised that the Fire Brigade chemical engine is particularly well equipped to cope with grass fires as suggested, and should bo a sufficient safeguard. A. Saunders wrote relative to damage, done to Pukepapa Road by a traction engine.—It was agreed that the repair work should be done and the cost charged to Mr Saunders. Messrs Brice and Co. wrote on behalf of Mrs Warren asking the council to defer action regarding notice to cut hedges ponding negotiations with tho previous tenant. —Further action was deferred until the next meeting . of the council. Mr F. R. 11. Brice wrote on behalf of T. 11. Bredin applying for a reduction in rates on a building vacant since November 1, 1927.—Mr Brice is to be advised that tho council had already agreed to allow a rebate on tho water rate for the current year. The question of revising the charge for the water supply and the Marton A. and P. Society showgrounds was reforred to the finance committee with power to act. Cr Honeyman was asked to furnish a report on a suggestion for planting suitable native trees on the cemetery area. Tho borough overseer reported on illegal use of the borough water supply. Explanations were received_ from those concerned, but were not considered satisfactory and the matter was reforred to the finance committee to investigate further with power to take legal proceedings if doomed necessary. Mr J. S. L. Howitt leaves Marton in the near future to reside in Christchurch. He has had his homo in Marton for a long period of years and has gained the respect of tho whole community. Because of his connection with tho Railway Appeal Board and of being a relieving magistrate, and because of his official duties in connection with the Assessment Court, Mr Hewitt has been called upon to do a great deal of travelling over tho whole of the Dominion. Mrs Hewitt has become well known in Marton through her active interest, in. the Navy League and other social organisations. She will be missed by many friends.
