WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

The Januarv meeting of the Awahuri Women's Institute was held in the hall on the 18th inst. The meeting opened with the singing of the “Ode to Friendship.” Two new members were enrolled. Mrs Port and Mrs Bond were appointed delegates to attend the group meeting held in February. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Simpson and Port, and Misses Minogue and Montgomerie. The meetjug concluded with the National Anthem. There was a large gathering of members and their friends, at the first annual pienic of the institute which -was held at Katehencr Park, Feilding, on Wednesday under ideal weather conditions. An excellent sports programme for children and adults was carried out by an energetic committee. A treasure hunt for married ladies was won by Mrs Kingston, the single ladies’ race by Miss Ivareliana, the married men’s race by Mr D Stewart, and the single men’s race by Mr A. Hancock. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Port for the use of the sports grounds and all those who worked so hard to make the picnic a success. The monthly meeting of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Tuesday, 17th January, Mrs W. Scott presiding over a fair attendance. Following the singing of the “Ode to Friendship” Mrs Scott took the opportunity to wish all the members a very happy and prosperous New Year. Visitors welcomed by the president were Mesdames Wood (Palmerston North), Senior (Auckland), Neilson (Dannevirke) and Jamieson. Mrs L. Burling was enrolled as a new member. Final arrangements were made for the institute picuic which is to be held on the Oroua Downs Sportsground on Friday, 27th January, and also for the first birthday party to be held on 21st February. Mrs Hobbs very kindly gave a demonstration on fretwork. The monthly competition for the hest posy was won by Mrs B. Oliver with Mrs D. Courdly second. A very interesting competition arranged by the hostesses was won by Mrs Hobbs. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Thompson, Proctor, T. Conlan, F. Raikes and Misses A. . Grammar and M. Christensen. A very happy afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
