FEILDING.

MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Mr It. M. Watson, S.M., presided at the fortnightly sitting of the Feilding Magistrate’s Court yesterday. E. B. Pennington was charged with failing to keep to the left-hand side or the road when driving his car on Mt. Stewart on. September 12. Sergeant Cahill stated that defendant, was on his wrong side of-the road and a collision with another car took place. —A fine of £1 10s, with £1 17s costs, was imposed. Several settlers of the Poliangina County were charged with allowing stock to wander on the highways: B. B. Bockett and J. C. Murray were e»ch fined 10s, with 22s costs, while T. Purnell was fined 15s, with 22s costs. CIVIL LIST. Judgment was granted plaintiff in the following undefended civil cases: Estate late F. G. Woollams, v. W. Miers, 12s 6d, costs £1 10s; Dave Barrett v. W. Pine, £7 Is, costs £1 --<-s 6d; A. G. Sporle v. P. H. Halford, £l2 7s lOd, costs £2 16s; M. Stewart v. Lucas and Coy., £3 9s 6d, costs £i 3s 6d; P. G. Guv and Coy. v. W. W. Abbott, £l2 11s Id, costs £2 16s. LADIES’ GOLF. On Monday afternoon a team from the Rangitikei Ladies’ Golf Club (Bulls) visited Feilding, being defeated by the home team by 11 matches to four. The following are the details, Feilding players being mentioned first: —Miss Bartholomew lost to Miss McKenzie, Miss McKirdy beat Miss Wilson, Miss Maclvor bent Mrs McDonell, Mrs Fair lost to Miss Tricker, Miss T. McKelvie, Mrs Salmond beat Mrs Scott, Miss Pearce; beat Miss Brookie, Miss Phillips beat Miss M. McKelvie, Miss Collins'lost to Mrs R. McKelvie.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Feilding Horticultural Society was held on Monday night, the president, Mr J. G. Eliott, being in the chair. Thp annual report and balance-sheet .(already published) were adopted and the following officers elected: —Patron, Hon. J. G. Cobbe; president, Mr J. G. Eliott; vice-presidents, Alesdames, Lethbridge, Swainson ,Cobbe Barltrop, Messrs Levett, Taylor, Williamson; committee, Mesdames Billman, Dowrick, Graham, Gorton, Lange, Millen, McOorkindale, Ross, Smith, Walpole, Watson, Misses Matthews (2)y Messrs Lumsden Lange, Ross, Mai, F. Mason and M. SteiVart. Mr A. F. Dowrick was re-elected hon. secretary and Mr J. E. Barltrop was appointed auditor. It was decided to hold the annual spring show on November 18, Mrs Millen being appointed chief steward. TAONUI TENNIS CLUB. The Taonui Tennis Club officially opened the courts for the season on Saturday afternoon, a good number of players and members being present. Trophies for the games were donated by Mr Lowther and Mr It. Pencliira, these being keenly contested for. At a suitable juncture, the president of the’club, Mr M. Durie, declared the courts open, wishing the club every success. A dainty afternoon tea, provided by the ladies, was greatly enjoyed. SOCIAL EVENING. .

The Feilding branch of the Labour Party gave a very successful card party and dance in aid of the funds of the Feilding Caledonian Pipe Band. For the dancing Mrs Jarrett officiated at the piano, her playing giving every satisfaction. The piano music was varied by Scottish dances led by 1 the pipes, while Master Henderson gave two Highland dances, his exhibition being greaty. enjoyed. In another room card players were catered for, the finish of the games seeing nine of the players tie for the second prize. A most successful and pleasant evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.. , RELIEF WORKERS STOOD DOWN. As a result of their refusal to proceed to the Makowhai relief camp, 12 single unemployed relief workers on the Feilding register have been suspended from relief work. This decision by the Feilding Unemployment Committee follows 'on the instructions received to this effect from the Unemployment Board, since when all the single relief workers eligible to go to the camp at Makowhai have been interrogated and informed of the action that would have to follow if' the refusal to go to camp was ]>ersisted with. The one single man who signified his readiness to go to camp has been continued on relief work in Feilding, the transport charges to take one man to the camp not being considered worth while undertaking. WOMEN’S DIVISION, FARMERS’ UNION. There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Feilding branch meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, when Mrs J. Williamson (president) extended a cordial welcome, to the new members of the committee, comprising Mesdames Hocken, Younger, McDowell and T. Green. Mrs McDowell was elected lion, secretary of the W.D.F.U. rooms, vice Mrs J. Williamson resigned. Arrangements were made for the annual birthday party. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs J. G. Cobbe for her offer to again provide the birthday cake. A donation of £2 2s was voted to the Wairoa branch towards relieving the distress of sufferers in the recent earthquake. It was decided to again co-operate with other organisations to carry on the catering at the A. and P. Association’s show.

NOTES. A sudden severe squall during ' the rain and wind storm which visited Feilding. on Monday night wrecked a plate glass window in a local shop. Considerable damage- was done to gardens, while the storm lasted, the duration fortunately not being very long.
