AIRPORT BOARD.

ln formally declining to associate itself in. the formation of an Airport Board at Palmerston North, members of the Kairanga County Council were of the opinion at yesterday’s meeting of that body, that the county was not collecting rates for the purpose of developing aviation. The action to be taken had been held over from a previous meeting, and yesterday Cr C. Anderson moved that a legal opinion should be sought as to the ' possible liabilities of the county if it joined in the scheme. It was pointed out that the council had power to spend money in fostering aviatioft. From the public spirit point of view, said the chairman (Cr D. Coliis), the scheme had appeared attractive to him, but the council’s liabilities were indefinite. If the proposal was going to be such a success ns its sponsors hoped, he wondered why they were anxious for the City Council and the County Council to take it up. Cr W. G. Shannon expressed the view that the sponsors of, the scheme were ahead of the times. Urging that the council should decide the matter there and then, Cr W A Moody said the rates were not being collected fer the purpose of aV C> t p n 'G. Mildon agreed, saying that, with the present stress of circumstances it would be best to leave the scheme’ well alone. The council could not afford to take on fresh liabilities.
