COTTON STRIKE

EFFORTS FOR SETTLEMENT.

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 15. Important progress was made yesterday in the attempt to settle the cotton strike, and as a result an agenda embodying the points at issue and the order for their discussion is before a full meeting of the conference in Manchester to-day. under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Labour’s conciliation officer, Mr F. W. Leggett. The importance of the agreed agenda is that adherence to it should greatly minimise the risk of a breakdown on such points as the reinstatement of operatives who left work in the early stages of the dispute. Meanwhile a sub-committee is proceeding with the discussion of questions on the agenda which are grouped under four headings: Firstly, the re-establishment of collective bargaining and the restoration of the agreements; secondly, machinery to ensure the honouring of any agreements reached; thirdly, wages; fourthly, reinstatement. , , The committee recommended that reorganisation should be considered at a subsequent stage.
