DISPLAY OF NARCISSI

PALMERSTON NORTH SOCIETY’S SHOW.

Delightful cream and golden daffodils made a beautiful display at the Palmerston North Horticultural Society’s Bulb Show in tiie Empire Hall this afternoon. With over (300 entries, there was a splendid exhibition. There were very strong classes for polyanthus, pansies and violets, which were an attractive feature, hut the principal interest centred in the outstandingly good narcissi, which were of iirst-elass standard. The keenest interest is being taken in the show, which will he continued this evening under the direction of Mr J. Galland, the enthusiastic secretary.

The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) who is president of the society, was present. lie congratulated the exhibitors and referred to the fact that Palmerston North had been allocated the National Daffodil Show for next season.

The show was officially opened by Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., the patron. He referred to the difficulties of the times and said there was a much better outlook so far as New Zealand was concerned. Rising produce prices meant the restoration of business and the rehabilitation of the unemployed. He stated that much credit was due to the .Mayor and the public lor assisting those in distress. Speaking of the flower show, he stated that the beautiful exhibits reflected great credit upon those responsible for the organisation. The society was a progressive one and hud an energetic committee and secretary, who were to be congratulated upon their efforts. The judges of the various classes wore as follow: —Narcissi, Mr A. Gibson (Marton); cut flowers and vegetables. Mr E. Mason (Feilding); decorative. Mrs J. Barltrop (Feilding); domestic, Mr A. E. 'Whitehead (Palmerston North); fancy work, Mrs W . G. Shannon (Newbury). The duties of stewards were carried out hv Misses D’Ath a.iul Moodhouse, Mesdames L. T. Brown, AY. J. Phillips, and It. A. McKenzie, Messrs L. J. Plank, G. H. Hawick. H. V. Mountfort, L. Murine, 1). C. Pryor, AY. L. H. Chapman and A. F. AA imsett. The afternoon tea arrangements were under the efficient supervision of Mesdames A. AY. Just, A. J. Shader, Smith and B. Munro. Airs It. A. AlcKenzie had charge of the stall. The cup donated by Airs A. E. Bussell for IS varieties of narcissi was won hv Air Larsen (Opiki). with Air A. Brewster (Levin), who had twice previously won the trophy, second, and Air J. C. Glover (Itongotea) third. There were four entries. The competition for the best worked apron exhibited was won In- Aliss AI. Killcn, with Aliss AY. Perry second. There were six entries.
