THE LIFTING CLOUDS.

Judging by the more buoyant spirit | displayed in various quarters, there are I definite indications that throughout the iManawatu district, at any rate, the worst of the depression is over. During tho course of conversations in Palmerston North yesterday with three different commercial travellers, a Press representative found that their cheerfulness of outlook amounted to definite enthusiasm. Tho first is engaged in selling activities which bring him into contact with a variety of business houses, and he reported an almost complete disappearance of the gloom which had surrounded the dealings with His clients during the past twelve months. The second traveller deals in a commodity used only by stock owners, and his happy testimony was one of new orders from' fresh customers, and bigger buying by old customers, backed up by ready " cash or its equivalent in money orders on their several dairy companies. In tho third instance, _ a motor tyre salesman, dealing with city retailers, reported a big improvement in sales as compared with August and September of last year, besides which the credit accounts of his customers were in a much sounder position. There is, of course, nothing in the nature of a boom, but the soundly advancing conditions of trade, as evidenced by these witnesses, is much more satisfactory from every point of view than tho inflation of a new financial bubble. The instances related could doubtless he multiplied, and they are welcome as indicating that the trading community is now witnessing the lifting of the financial clouds.
