OBITUARY.

MR DAVID GREVES,

An association with the Dominion extending over half a century was brought to a close by the death of Mr David Greves, which occurred in the Waipukurau Hospital on Monday last. The deceased gentleman was born in Liverpool, England, of Scottish parentage, and shortly after his parents returned to Glasgow. Mr Greves had attained his 27th year when he decided to come to New Zealand, and after a voyage extending over five months ho landed from the sailing ship May Queen at Auckland in 1878. Setting out on foot, Mr Greves braved the unknown by tramping to Opitiki, thcnco to Gisborne, and along the coast to Hastings, a considerable portion of the journey being through virgin bush. The new colonist decided to settle in Hastings and he followed the occupation of a tailor in the Hawke’s Bay town for 45 years, but after the death of his wife six years ago Mr Grecves came to this district to reside with his younger son at Aokautere. Until about 18 months ago Mr Groves had enjoyed good health. He then commenced to' fail and had been an inmate of the Waipukuro.u Hospital for 17 days. At the time of his death Air Greves had reached the advanced age of 81 years. There are left to mourn their loss a family of two sons and two daughters, the members being Messrs David and Archibald Greves, both of Aokautere ; Airs L. H. Cheer, of Elsthorpc, Hawke’s Bay ; and Miss M. Greves, of Sydney. There are 13 grandchildren.
