SUCCESS OF VOLUNTARY BAS is
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. Pleasure at the success achieved in the reconstitution of the military forces on a voluntary basis was expressed by Hon. j. G. Cobbe in an interview today. He said that, having regard to a comparison between Great Britain and New Zealand of the populations only, and disregarding the many advantages of service in the territorial army in Great Britain for prospective recruits which could not be reproduced here, it had appeared that, under the most favourable conditions, New Zealand would raise at most a force of about 4000. The strength at ..lay 31, however, was 0938, and this figure was not the result of a burst of enthusiasm, but was the result ol a progressive increase in the number oi recruits ever since recruiting opened, and tlris progressive increase was being maintained.
