Mr H. P. Glen, formerlyof the staff of tho Palmerston North High School, has been appointed to the staff ot tne Wairarapn High School. Mr R. 0. Haddon, who was recently compelled to enter a private hospital in order to undergo an operation, is now making good progress towards recovery. _ Th© friends of Mr T. E. Mitchell, who has been an inmate of a private b° s P l ' tnl for tho past three weeks, will be pleased to learn that he is progressing satisfactorily. The Levin Borough Council has appointed the Mayor (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) as its representative on the r oxton Harbour Board and Cr. Keedwell as its representative on the HoroVhenua Power Board, both vacancies having been caused by the death of Mr C. Blenkhorn.

The death occurred yesterday, says a Press Association message from Gisborne, of Mr Thomas Bruce Spence, of Tiniroto station. He was one of tho best-known station-holders in Poverty Bay, and for many years was a prominent member of various local bodies. Ho was aged 63. Mr G. Muntz, assistant commissioner, will carry on tho duties of British Trade Commissioner during the absence of Mr L. A. Paisli in Canada and England during the next twelve months. Mr and Mrs Paish will leave for Auckland by to-morrow evening’s express to connect with the Aorangi for Vancouver.

The relatives of the late MrF. Hardy, a former member of the teaching staff of the Palmerston North Technical School, were extended a motion of sympathy on tho loss they had sustained, at last night’s meeting of the committee of the Technical School. It was also decided to place on record Mr Hardy’s years of very faithful service.

Mr C. E. Cole has been appointed solicitor to the Public Trust in succession to Mr G. G. Rose, whoso appointment as solicitor to the Treasury was recently announced. Mr Cole was in private practice in Dunedin beforo joining the Public Trust as assistant solicitor ten years ago. Since 1927 lie has been solicitor to the Rural Intermediate Credit Board.

Tliero died at the Waipukurau Hospital recently a respected member of the Maori race, Mr James Kereka Rapaea, at the age of 60 years. Deceased was a descendant of Hone Heko and Tamatera. Tho late Mr Rapaea was educated at Te Aute College, and while there passed as a first-grade Maori interpreter. He was also a keen footballer, and represented New Zealand against England in 1895 with the Rugby team which left New Zealand in that year. Tho relatives of the late Mr C. W. White were extended a motion of sympathy in tho great loss they had recently suffered, at last night’s meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Referees’ Association. The president, Mr L. J. Plank, paid a tribute to the many splendid qualities which the deceased gentleman had possessed and to tho great service he had rendered Rugby, the speaker remarking that Mr White had filled tho position of president of tho Referees’ Association for ten years. Mr W. L. Fitzherbert, at last night’s annual meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors and the Technical School Committee, was re-elected chairman for the second successive year. Messrs J. A. Nash and T. R. Hodder spoke eulogistically of tho work of the chairman and moved that he accept office for a further term. Mr Fitzherbert at first declined the honour, explaining that he was a member of four other loal bodies and ho felt that the calls on his time prevented him from again accepting office. However, at the unanimous request of tho members Mr Fitzherbert consented to again fill the position.
