(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, Juno 23.

On Monday evening last the members of the Rongotea junior football team gave Mr Jack Clark a surprise party at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. E. Bottcher. The purpose of the party was to make a presentation to Mr Clark, who was _ a member of tho Rongotea third and junior grade teams in turn for several years. Mr Clarke, who is making his future residenoe in the Waikato, where he is taking up farming, was presented with a handsome cigarette case by Mr R. Gloyn, captain of the juniors, who expressed regret on behalf of the members, in losing tho services of a very capable player. Prior to suppor, cards, vocal items and community singing were the order of tho programme. At tho conclusion, Mr J. Major thanked the ladies for the delicious supper they had provided.

On Wednesday tho Te Kawau Rugby Sub-Union annual seven-aside tournament was hold at Oroua Downs in beautiful weather. The Rongotea Club sent three teams to compete, a senior and two junior teams. The seniors, who had to play Taikorca, were defeated by 3 points to nil. and were thus eliminated from the competition. Tho junior B won their first gamo by default, but woro beaten in the second round by Foxton B by 17 points to nil. The junior A team drew Hui Mai A in the first round, and after five extra spells of three minutes each had been played R. Gloyn managed to cross and score the only try of the game. In the second round they met Kaimatarau A and won by 5 points to 3, R. Childs scoring and R. Gloyn converting for Rongotea, and F. Boswell scoring for Kaimatarau. The next round was the 6emi-final, and Rongotea had to play Foxton B. In the eeoond extra spell M. Wright scored for Rongotea. In the final Rongotea played Foxton A, and were beaten by 13 points to nil. The team which represented Rongotea A was: L. Craig, R. Wright, R. Gloyn, E. Parker, P. Childs, M. Wright and V. Hughes. In conversation with Mr J. F. McKelvie’s gardener, Mr G. Aggett, it was learned that on his stand at the recent Manawatu Show, which created such a great amount of interest, and brought forth merited praise from competent judges, there were no fewer than 27 varieties of apples, and 16 other kinds of fruits, together with 43 kinds of vegetables, comprising 152 varieties. There were several kinds not in common use which only need to become better known, and would bo welcomo additions to the tablo. This splendid display is another noteworthy advertisement for the fertility of the soil of this district, and shows what proper cultivation can accomplish. Another local exhibitor worthy of note is Mr W. G. Pedley, who did well at the Show, and whose efforts were rewarded with numerous prizes. Mr C. H. Courtney, of Eltham, is the guest of Mr H. Caverhill.
