CIVIL SERVANTS’ SALARIES.
ANNUAL INCREMENTS. TO BE ALLOWED THIS YEAR. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, April 20. As the result of representations that have been made, the Government has decided to allow the annual increments in the puhlic service to be paid this year. In making the announcement in the House of Representatives to-day, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes said it had been represented to Cabinet that if the increments were withheld, as proposed under the Adjustment Bill, undue hardship would be inflicted on numbers of officers who, of course, were also to receive the 10 per cent, reduction in wages and salaries, making a heavier burden for some shoulders than for others. The idea of withholding the increments arose out of the financial position of the country,. but at the same time the Government wished to see the reductions made in salaries and wages spread as equitably as possible and was not desirous unduly penalising any particular officers or class of them. In the circumstances tho Government had decided that for this year the annual increments would be paid. Mr H. E. Holland expressed gratification that Cabinet had decided to take the step outlined by Mr Forbes.
