(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, April 19. Mr and Mrs J. Mclntosh, of Christchurch, are visiting Mr and Mrs D. C. McEwen. Mr and Mrs McEwon will bo leaving shortly to tallo up a position at Puyeegur Point lighthouse, at) the southernmofet end of the South Island, where _Mr McEwen has been appointed to a position in charge of the radio. Mr and Mrs E. Parkin, of Johnston Street, have returned to Foxton from a visit to Australia. A meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held last evening, presided over by the Mayor (Mr Perreau). The certifying officer (Mr McKenzie) reported that unemployment registrations had increased during the last few days by eleven, owing to men being put off from a mill. Tho local allocation, on the other hand, had been reduced from £lsl 5s last week to £146 9o for tho coming period. The committee had been cut down by £5, while tho registrations were steadily climbing all tho time. The Horowhenua County Council had now put off all its men who had been engaged on tar-sealing work as this had been completed, and they were going on the No. 5 scheme at Levin. Constable Owen considered that tho position should improve next month with tho increase in taxation. The Mayor said he had been in conference with Mr J. Linklater, M.P., that day on tho matter, and had explained Foxton’s position to him. Ho intended waiting on tho Minister the next day seeking an increased allocation. After some discussion it was decided to wire the Minister asking for an increased allocation, in order/to back up the application of Mr Linklater. Yesterday afternoon Broadcast Coverage Commissioners visited Foxton for tho purpose of conferring with local wireless enthusiasts. —On Saturday a bowling rink from Foxton visited Shannon green to play the holders of tho Kinneburgh Feathers. Foxton succeeded in wresting tho trophies from tho holders, C. Hook’s team, by 19 points to 17. The following wore the rinlcs : —Foxton, Howe, Newth, Woods, Huntley (skip) 20. Shannon, Grey, Bovis, Quarry, C. Hook (skip) 17.
