(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTOX. March 20. The official opening of tho Herrington Golf Club’s links took place in ideal weather on Saturday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of visitors and local members. Yarious competitions wero indulged in, and after a tasty afternoon tea had been dispensed by the ladies at the pavilion a mixed foursome was _ indulged in. Everyone spent a most enjoyable time. The links wero officially declared open for play for the season by the president (Mr Wm. Trueman). The competitions were won as follow: —Ladies Drive, Mrs A. P. Easton; putt, Miss E. Wanklyn; approach and drive. Mrs A. W. Brown (Wanganui). Men’s drive, \\. Trueman; putt, Mr H. Blythe (Shan non), approach and putt, Mr C. W. Pedersen. Miss Goodwin and Mr J. Hennessy (Shannon) returned the best card in connection with the foursome. At the conclusion of play the president presented the prizes won during the afternoon. Tho first meeting of this year of the combined Band of Hope was held on Friday evening. There was a splendid attendance, upwards of 40 children being present, Mrs Ross presided and after the temperance hymn and prayer, and a few opening remarks, a programme of entertainment was given. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women Christian Temperance Union was held last week. Mrs %pss presided. It was decided to alter the date of meorincs from the third Thursday to the second Tuesday of the month. A paper was road bv the secretary, Mrs John Symons. On Thursday evening a very successful social was held in the Methodist schoolroom under the auspices of the Methodist Girls’ Bible Class, under the direction of Miss Winnie Mairs. The proceedings commenced with a community smg, after which the programme consisted of competitions, games, a duet, hy Misses Nancy Chrvstall and Margaret Staff, and a piano solo' by Miss Joan Cowley. Prizes for competitions wore won by Misses McKenzie and Mr Frank Cowley. Shortly after S o’clock on Saturday evening the Fire Brigade receivod a call to an outbreak of fire at the roar of Lay Bros’, fruit shop in Main Street., where it was noticed that a pile of old boxes had caught alight. The outbreak was extinguished within a few minutes.
