GREAT SOUTH AFRICAN MINES CLOSING.
CAPETOWN, Feb. 19.. The directorate of De Beers Diamond Mines have decided to close the mines-for an indefinite period, pending an improvement in the world’s diamond market. , ’ , The decision, which will become effective on March 31, Affects 1500 whites and many thousands of natives. It involves the probable curtailment of expenditure in the Union of wages amounting to £2 a 250,000. A number of whites are to bo retained on a part-time basis. Those dismissed are to receive liberal cash payments.
