CENTRAL RELIEF

The working men. and the male and female clerks in offices will determine whether the £IOOO Christmas appeal will be realised. This sum is required to provide the barest necessities in food for over 1200 fellow townsfolk, because 18s 9d per week is insufficient to provide food, clothing and rent for a man, his wife and family. Business firms arc contributing well, but it is felt that most of the single employees, at any rate, could spare Is per week to their weekly staff relief fund, without much inconvenience. Many married men, in comfortable positions, it is hoped, will step up to their responsibility by subscribing to the weekly list in their own organisation, and encourage other members to do the same. There must be some six thousand employees in the city, and, if everyone gave threepence per week, this alone would equal £7O per week required to provide food for the depot. By die preliminary returns so far received, the employees in Government and private organisations are responding to this organised effort to help those less fortunate members cf their own class who aro out of a job. It is anticipated a steadily increasing number of employees’ lists will be received this week. Sec notice on front page. CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR £IOOO. The following additional amounts have been received by the Central Relief Coinmittee in its campaign to raise £IOOO: —

Total to dato £298 17 10 The hon. treasurer (Mr P. 8. Larcomb) has a supply of forms for employees to sign authorising employers to deduct their contributions lrom wages, and will be pleased to hand anyone' a supply on application at his office. The staff contributions can be sent to the hon. treasurer at any time, and will be acknowledged in the Press. On Saturday . staff contributions totalled 12 separate payments and tlie Relief Committee is; confident that the employees of tho city and district will provide a substantial amount weekly.
