KING GIVES STAVES.
SOUVENIRS FOR RETIRING
MINISTERS
Ex-policeman Jack Hayes, ex-taxi-driver Ben Smith, and ex-ship’s carpenter Tom Henderson recently called on King George at Buckingham Palace to relinquish their posts in the Labour Government. When the Government was formed in 1929, Mr Hayes was appointed vicechamberlain to the royal household; Air Smith, treasuier to the royal household, and Air Henderson, comptroller to the royal household. The posts are traditional, and in these days practically only formal. The insignia of the offices are white staves, and it was these that the three Labour men went to hand over.
But, contrary to precedent, the King handed them back the staves as souvenirs, and also autographed photographs of the Queen and himself. It is customary for outgoing occupants of the office to hand their staves to the King who then bestows them on the incoming officers. New staves will’ have to be found for the nev officers.
