ANNUAL GARDEN FETE. Large numbers attended the College Street School’s annual garden fete on Saturday afternoon and during the evening,* when the stalls transacted • a amount of business. Throughout the afternoon the scene was a colourful one and with strings of coloured electric lights the . carnival atmosphere also predominated during the evening. The function was conducted by the ladies’ committee,- under the direction of Mrs A. Hopwood, in conjunction with,the men’s committee. Races were conducted for the children during the afternoon and resulted as follow:
Girls. —Standards 5 and 6: P. Payne 1, B. Inglis 2. Standards 3 and 4: *J. Hankins 1, C. Kemp 2. Standards 1 and 2: J. Brooks 1, E. Holloway 2. Primers: L. Cutler 1, F. Gilbert 2. Three-legged races: Standards' 1 and 2, H. Came and E. Holloway 1; standards 3 and 4, H. Coulton’and G. Proctor; standards 5 and 6, P. Payne and I. Mills. Boys.—Standards 5 and 6: W. Moore 1, E. Christmas 2. Standards 3 and 4: M. Andrews 1, Scotty Maclntyre 2. Standards 1 and 2: C. Sutherland 1, C. Boolton 2. Primers: B. Thompson 1. N. Farland 2. Threelegged race: C. Sutherland and H. Reid. A treasure hunt, conducted by members of the teaching staff, was won by L. Harkness with Mrs R. Nasmith second. A trousseau set was won by Mrs F. E. Collinson Grev Street (No. 298). lie dressed doll went to Miss P. Jones (No. 594); the silk stockings to Mrs Barnard (No. 127); and cake to Mrs J. H. Whyte, 71bs sozs (correct weight 71bs 6 ozs); the ham to Mrs Ward (No. 10); the. baby’s outfit to Mrs C. L. Mowlem (No. 43); the dinner to W. J. Olsen (No. 29); and the box of chocoififes to Olwyn Richards (No. 11). The clock golf was won by Mr W. A. Swinbourn and Colonel Whvte who tied. A* side show was conducted by boys. In the evening the City Band contributed music.
A feature of the fete was the exhibition of work by pupils of the school and by pupils 'of the special class under Miss Wapp. In the evening there was a short concert programme presented, all the performers being heartily applauded. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte duet, S. Hopwood and J. Rutherford : Spanish ballet, N. Edwards, C. Sapwell. M. Edwards and E. Edwards; recitation, Melba Niven; song, Joan Wollerman ; Russian da pee, Jean Curtis; musical monologue, B. Stubbs; Reel o’ Tulloch and Highland Fling, M. Edwards, V. Edwards, L. McAffer and M. Lawson; duo, B. Inglis and E. Barringer; skipping dance, C. Sapwell. Mrs Wollerman was at the piano.
