RELIEF FINANCE.
URGENT QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT.
NEEDS OF PALMERSTON NORTH
Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. An urgent question regarding the weekly allocation of funds for the relief of unemployed men in Palmerston North was asked, by Mr J. A. Nash when the House of Representatives met to-day. He strongly urged the Prime Minister to increase the money allocation, as there were 1307 men out of work, and employment was being found for 1200, though under the limited finances both married and single men were not able to get sufficient work weekly to meet their bare needs.
The Prime Minister replied that he was not able to say what was being done for Palmerston North in particular, but on the general aspect he could say that the money provided for the Unemployment Board was in accordance with the recent legislation, and was being advanced in anticipation of the receipts front the new taxes. This advance was quite up to the amount available under the taxation.
“I recognise the difficulties prevailing in many centres” added Mr Forbes, “and all I can do in the matter is to bring it under the notice of the Minister of Labour and see if anything can be done for the special case which has been raised by the member for Palmerston.”
