FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Aug. 3. The printing of the Manawatu electoral roll has* now been completed. It contains 8270 names as against 8146 on the main roll in 1923. Tiro work of compiling the supplementary roll is now being proceeded with and the indications are that this roll will bo considerably bigger than in 1928. The electoral work is being _ undertaken this year by Messrs W. R. McKenzie (postmaster) and his assistant (Mr Brady). Mr and Mrs J. K. Hornblow returned yesterday from a few days spent in Wanganui. Mrs Brown, of Wanganui, is on holiday in Foxton. Tho light, sandy country around Himatangi ana Oroua Downs has not received such a soaking for years as it has experienced lately and the rain has been very beneficial. In tho Moutoa and Whirokino districts, however, the land, which is lowlying, had been inundated and farmers have been put to considerable inconvenience. Feed generally throughout tho district is scarce. Lambs are making their appearance in increasing numbers daily and tho weather is most unfavourable in this eonnection. The water is still lying on a large area of land at Moutoa and \\ hirokino caused through the- breach in the stopbank at Moutoa a week -ago, and it will be some weeks beforo these areas will be in a fit state to farm again. If tiie water does not soon get away, the spring feed will bo greasly retarded. In conversation with a ‘‘Standard" reporter, Mr G. Barber, who for many years has been engaged in farming in the Moutoa and Maxotiri districts, expressed the opinion that during the past tew months the level of his property had risen to a considerable extent. His farm in the past had been very wet in the winter, and, although the past few weeks had been exceptionally wet and floods had occurred, he had areas of his land, which had been subject to flooding in tho past, quite dry. He expressod the opinion that the recent earthquakes had caused the Moutoa swamp to rise.

Last week Mr A. J. Phillipps (managing secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital) accompanied by board members and the farm manager, paid a visit to Foxton for the purpose of studying market garden ing conditions with a view to the board undertaking tho growing of its own vegetables at Awapuni. An inspection was made of Mr Holgerson’s market garden at Motuiti and Mr Holgerson offered some useful information concerning the management of his property. v On Thursday the Foxton’s Women Institute held a special handicraft afternoon, vvhen there was a large attendance of members. Mrs Harrison, of Pahiatua, was present and brought with her a wonderful exhibition of handicrafts. She gave a most interesting and instructive demonstration in rug making and soft toy making. At the conclusion Mrs Harrison was accorded a hearty expression of appreciation. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the following hostesses : Mesdames Signal, I. Mr Stanley, Seabury, W. H. Smith, F. Procter and G. F. Smith. Football has finished as far as the usual competitions are concerned locally. The Foxton juniors were again successful in annexing the junior championship for the Horowhenua district and in this respect put up a very fine performance. No senior team was put in tho field this year by Foxton, there being only two teams, the juniors and thirds. A number of the old senior players joined up with the newly-formed Moutoa and Whitanunui teams. During the month of July rain fell locally on 18 days, a total of 4.4 inches being recorded. The maximum fall was 1.04 inches on the Bth inst. The hottest day was the 17th when the thermometer registered 55 degrees and the coldest, tho Ist, with 36 degrees.
